Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro's men's soccer team's undefeated streak at UNCG Soccer Stadium has now reached four games, as the Spartans on Saturday evening tied ETSU by a final of 1-1.
With the result, the Spartans are now 4-7-2 on the season and have picked up points in two of their first three SoCon games.
“Very proud of the performance. It's important to have a good showing in front of a great crowd at Homecoming and against the league leaders right now,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “Scored a good goal and had other chances that should have been tucked away, but overall I thought it was a complete team performance by everybody and that's what we wanted. We want to keep getting better every day and ideally the results will come, but we just want to be peaking at the right time.
“In the end, just very proud of the team tonight. Great alumni turnout and thanks to all of the fans that came out. The spirit was fantastic.”
Despite a quiet first 30 minutes offensively for the Spartans, UNCG took a 1-0 lead after Jacob Planell scored just 17 seconds after Maullin brought him off the bench. Planell, who is tied for the team lead in goals with three, took advantage of a ball placed to him off passes from Payne McKiver and Leeroy Maguraushe before letting off a shot that would hit the post before trickling into the net.
Defensively, goalkeeper Ricky Zarri weathered multiple chances by the Buccaneers to ensure the Spartans headed into halftime with the lead.
ETSU, however, would tie the game less than 10 minutes into the second half, as Bruno Andrade found Danny Barlow off a corner kick for the Buccaneers' only goal on the evening. The Spartans nearly took the lead back with 21 minutes left in the second frame as Manny Apau had a breakaway and launched a shot that looked destined for the corner of the net only to be saved by ETSU goalkeeper Josh Perryman.
Without a goal after Barlow's early in the second half, UNCG and ETSU headed to overtime where they would ultimately tie. It was the seventh time in 13 games that the Spartans have gone to overtime this season.
UNCG had two quality chances in the first overtime as Maguraushe and Matt Mattis both had shots that were blocked by Perryman. While UNCG had more chances in the second overtime, they – like ETSU – did not score before the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Spartans will continue SoCon action this upcoming Tuesday at VMI in Lexington, Va. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Through 13 games so far this year, the Keydets are 1-11-1 and 0-3-0 in SoCon play. VMI lost its first eight games of the season before tying Howard 0-0 on Sept. 29. Three days later, the Keydets scored their first victory since Sept. 5, 2014, when they defeated Regent.
In the all-time series between UNCG and VMI, the Spartans hold a 16-0-0 advantage.
