GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (3-0) beat Duke 8-5 Saturday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Spartans scored all eight runs in the fifth inning.
After Duke scored four runs in the fourth inning, UNCG responded with its big offensive production the next inning. Samantha Lagrama led off with a stand up double to right field. Kamryn Graves entered as a pinch-runner for Lagrama, advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a single to centerfield by Rachel Johnson. Melanie Darges reached first base on an error by the shortstop, and Monica Pepe loaded the bases with an infield single. Katie Stettler brought home a run with a walk, and Darges then ran home safely on a wild pitch. Stephanie Bryden loaded the bases again, and Jasmine Palmer knocked in Pepe and Stettler with an RBI-single to left field. Bryden and Palmer advanced a base each on a groundout by Makenna Matthijs, and Marisa Sholtes brought home Bryden and Palmer with a double off the right center fence. The final run came off another RBI-double off the right center fence.
Hannah Stiltner entered the game in the fifth inning and got out of a jam with a flyout and three-pitch strikeout.
The next inning Stiltner got a fly out to left field for the leadoff batter and ended the inning with another fly out and a groundout she fielded after Duke scored its last run.
In the final inning Stiltner started it with a strikeout followed by a ground out. After two Blue Devils reached base, another ground out ended the game.
Stiltner earned the win and gave up one run, three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Bryden started the game and went four complete innings. She allowed her first hit of the fall season in the second inning and kept Duke scoreless for the first three innings. She finished with four runs, five hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
Palmer had a team-high two hits with a double and single, and Stettler added a single and two walks.
UNCG returns to action against North Carolina at home next Friday at 6 p.m.
