GREENSBORO, N.C.- After opening up the season on the road with back-to-back victories over Presbyterian and Longwood, UNCG’s men’s soccer team on Saturday evening opened up its 2018 home action at UNCG Soccer Stadium against Davidson with a 1-0 loss in overtime. The Spartans are now 2-1 on the season.

After a weather delay that lasted more than two hours pushed back the start time of the contest, the two teams returned to the pitch just after 9 p.m. to begin play. The two teams would battle throughout the evening before Davidson scored a goal almost 94 minutes into the contest for the victory.

“It's hard to lose a game you have dominated but that's the way things go,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “We must bounce back Tuesday.”

In the first half, the Spartans applied continuous pressure on the Wildcats and recorded three shots and five corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net with the attacking mentality.

That trend continued in the second half, as the Spartans (nine) tallied more shots than the Wildcats (four) but were unable to score.

Knotted after 90 minutes, UNCG and Davidson headed into overtime. The Spartans, however, were unable to notch their second overtime victory of the season, as the Wildcats’ Jordan Hill scored off a scramble in the box following a corner kick.

The Spartans will return to the pitch on Tuesday evening to host High Point for a 7 p.m. kickoff at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The matchup will be the 31st all-time between the two North Carolina schools. The Spartans are 18-10-2 all-time against the Panthers but will be looking to stop a six-game losing streak in the series.

High Point is currently 3-0 this season with victories over Wofford, Davidson and ETSU.

The game will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
