Farmville, Va.- For the first time in five years, UNC Greensboro’s Men’s Soccer team has won its first two games of the season after the Spartans defeated Longwood 5-1 on Tuesday evening at Longwood Soccer Field in Farmville, Va.

The outing showcased the Spartans’ depth from top to bottom, as four different players scored while the defense was once again strong in front of the net.

“I thought we were quite good tonight and we showed that we’re capable of keeping the ball and capable of scoring goals,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “Against Presbyterian we didn’t create many chances, so that was a point of focus today and some really exciting soccer happened as a result. We scored some really fantastic goals. I was really proud of the boys. Disappointed we couldn’t get the clean sheet, but nevertheless a good result.”

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as freshman Jacob Planell scored the first goal of his collegiate career less than 15 minutes into the contest. Sophomore Cyril Owolabi was credited with the assist on Planell’s goal.

A little more than five minutes later, freshman Micah Albert also netted the first goal of his career.

While the Lancers responded less than 10 minutes after Albert’s goal as Shane Curtis headed home the first goal the Spartans have conceded this regular season, UNCG pulled away late in the first half scoring two more times to head into halftime with a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore Manny Apau also scored the first goal of his time with the Spartans nearly 36 minutes into the contest as he took advantage of a pass from Moises Gonzalez to beat goalkeeper Jacob Reimers. Less than a minute later, senior Matt Mattis, one of four Spartans named to the Southern Conference preseason all-conference team, recorded his first goal of the season.

The four first half goals were the Spartans’ most since also netting four goals in the opening half of a 6-1 victory over Wofford on Oct. 17, 2017.

The Spartans continued their offensive attack in the second half as Mattis scored his second goal of the game in the 67th minute. Freshman Brooks Rice and sophomore Nelson Oceano assisted on the goal.

The two-goal effort was the second multi-goal performance of Mattis’ career, as the senior also netted a pair against Furman last year.

After opening the season on the road for their first two contests, the Spartans will return home this Saturday to take on Davidson at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.

The Wildcats lost their regular season opener to High Point on Monday night, 2-1. The Spartans, meanwhile, will be looking for their first 3-0 start to a season since 2013.
