GREENSBORO, N.C.- While it took an extra frame to do so, the UNC Greensboro Men’s Soccer team on Friday evening opened up the 2018 season with a 1-0 victory over Presbyterian College.

Knotted 0-0 after 90 minutes, the two teams went into overtime before sophomore midfielder Alex Henderson headed home the game-winning goal in the 99th minute.

It was the Spartans’ only shot in the extra frame.

"Proud of the group and what they did tonight," said Head Coach Justin Maullin. "It wasn't the prettiest, but all in all a full-time effort from this team. From the seniors down to the freshmen, they performed well. Freshman Brooks Rice played all 100 minutes and Micah Albert was good too while Ricky Zarri was excellent in goal to start his collegiate career."

The victory marked the first season-opening victory since the 2016 season when the Spartans defeated Jacksonville 2-0. Additionally, the overtime win was UNCG’s first overtime victory since the Spartans defeated Mercer 1-0 in double overtime on Oct. 7, 2017.

For Henderson, the game-winning goal was his second-career goal. He previously scored against North Carolina during his freshman season last year.

In net on Friday evening was redshirt sophomore Ricky Zarri. In his first appearance on the field for the Spartans, Zarri saved eight shots.

Along with Zarri, four other Spartans played all 100 minutes in the opener as Leeroy Maguraushe, Casey Penland, Josh Masten and Rice also did so.

Rice was also one of four freshman to make his collegiate debut, as the former Gatorade Boys State Player of the Year for Alabama along with Jacob Planell, Matthew Cutler and Albert logged minutes.

The Spartans return to the field next Tuesday against Longwood.
