STOCKTON, Calif. – The No. 11 seed UNCG men’s golf team finished 10th in the NCAA Stockton, California Regional with a team score of 5-over 869 (293-283-293) on Wednesday at the par-72, 7,239-yard The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Spartans topped No. 12 UC Irvine (8-over 872), No. 9 Kennesaw State (14-over 878) and No. 13 North Dakota State (22-over 886) in the 13-team region.
No. 8 Kansas (281-282-281) won the region at 20-under 844, and No. 3 Stanford was one stroke behind (285-283-277). No. 10 Iowa State came in third place at 17-under 847 (278-284-285), and No. 2 Alabama claimed fourth place at 15-under 849 (282-280-287). No. 5 Oregon secured the last spot to advance at 12-under 852 (289-283-280) as the top-five teams in the region and the top individual move on to the national championships to be played May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Charles Corner of UTEP will be the individual going to the national championship after finishing tied for third place at 9-under 207 (73-64-70).
No. 1 LSU finished in sixth place at 7-under 857 (293-293-281), and No. 7 Colorado was the last team to finish below-par at 2-under 862 (290-282-290). No. 6 TCU (283-286-296) was four strokes ahead of UNCG while No. 4 USC (295-284-288) came up two strokes ahead.
Nick Lyerly had the best day for the Spartans as the only golfer below-par at 1-under 71 with the help of three birdies on the back-nine. Lyerly tied Josh Stockwell (71-73-72) for 30th place at even-par 216 (75-70-71). Stockwell bounced back after three bogeys in the first eight holes to birdie the next three and was 2-under 34 on the back-nine.
Bryce Hendrix tied for 45th place at 3-over 219 (75-68-76). Jonathan Brightwell (72-76-75) was four strokes behind for a tie for 61st place. Joseph Cansler tied for 67th place at 10-over 226 (79-72-75).
