Men's Golf Moves Up into a Tie for 8th Place in NCAA Stockton Region After Day Two
STOCKTON, Calif. – The No. 11 seed UNCG men’s golf team moved two spots up in the NCAA Stockton, California Regional into a tie for eighth place with No. 1 LSU following the second round at even-par 576 after turning in a team score of 5-under 283 on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,239-yard The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Spartans tied for the 4th-best score on the day in the 13-team regional.
No. 2 Alabama (282-280) and No. 10 Iowa State (278-284) lead the way at 14-under 562, and No. 8 Kansas (281-282) is one stroke behind for third place. No. 3 Stanford sits in fourth place at 8-under 568 (285-283) with No. 6 TCU (283-286) one stroke behind for fifth place. The top-five teams and the top individual in each region will advance to the national championships to be played May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
No. 5 Oregon (289-283) and No. 7 Colorado (290-282) are tied for sixth-place at 4-under 572. No. 4 USC (295-284) is three strokes behind UNCG and LSU. No. 9 Kennesaw State (6-over 582), No. 12 UC Irvine (7-over 583) and No. 13 North Dakota State (16-over 592) round out the bottom three.
Bryce Hendrix tied for the fifth best score of the day with a 4-under 68 and is tied for 21st place at 1-under 143. Hendrix didn’t bogey a single hole, and all four birdies came on the back-nine. Josh Stockwell (71-73) is one stroke behind for a tie for 26th place.
Nick Lyerly was the only other Spartan than Hendrix to register a below-par score in the second round with a 2-under 70. Lyerly was 1-under 35 on the back-nine and had an eagle on hole six. He is tied for 34th place at 1-over 145.
Jonathan Brightwell is tied for 58th place at 4-over 148 (72-76), and Joseph Cansler is in 68th place three strokes behind. After starting the round with a 3-over 39 on the back-nine, Cansler had four birdies on the front nine, including three of the last four holes, for an even-par 72.
UNCG will play the final round on Wednesday in a threesome with Colorado and LSU starting at 8:25 a.m. PT. on hole 1. Cansler will start things off for the Spartans, and Brightwell, Lyerly, Stockwell and Hendrix will tee off every 11 minutes after. Live stats can be found at golfstatresults.com.
