PINEHURST, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team jumped from third to first place in the Southern Conference Championship with a team score of six-over par 582 (297-285) on Monday at the par-72, 7,118-yard Pinehurst No. 9 and will head into the final round on Tuesday with a 12-stroke lead. Junior Bryce Hendrix (72-71), freshman Nick Lyerly (73-70) and senior Josh Stockwell (74-69) are in a four-way tie with Furman’s Keller Harper (73-70) for the individual first place.
Both Chattanooga (290-304) and ETSU (292-302) trail the Spartans by 12 strokes. UNCG was the only team in the second round to turn in a team score below par with a 3-under 285. Furman had the second best round score at six-over 294 and sits in fourth place at 19-over 595.
Stockwell had the best score in the day at 3-under 69. He went 2-under 34 on the back nine with birdies on holes 10 and 14. Lyerly was one stroke behind to tie for the second-best score in the round. He had just one bogey and birdied on holes eight, 10 and 11. Hendrix tied for the fourth-best round with a 1-under 71 with a team-high six birdies on the day.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell moved up five spots for 18th place at 9-over 153 (78-75). Sophomore Grant Powell also improved his individual standing by four slots to tie for 30th place at 15-over 159 (83-76).
All five UNCG golfers registered top-20 scores in the day.
UNCG will start the final round on hole No. 1 at 8:15 a.m. and be paired with Chattanooga.
