GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (37-9, 10-2) split a doubleheader against the Chattanooga Mocs (23-23, 7-5) on Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium, dropping game one 5-4 in 10 innings and winning the next game 4-2. The Spartans's 37 victories tie for fifth-most in a single season in program history, matching the 2000 team (37-29).

UNCG scored the last two runs of the second game for the win. The game-winning run came in the fourth inning. Kayleigh Willis led off with a single through the left side, and Gabi Cubbage singled to centerfield with one out. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, pinch-hitter Emily Acquaviva knocked in Willis with a single to centerfield.

The Spartans added an insurance run in the sixth inning. After Acquaviva was hit by a pitch with one out, Becca Kale walked. Rachael McClaskey loaded the bases with a single through the right side. With two outs Makenna Matthijs drew a walk to allow Kale to jog home for the run.

UNCG scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning. Alexis Overdiep led off with a single to second base. After a throwing error on a bunt by Kale from the third baseman, McClaskey moved both runners on a sac bunt. Palmer hit a sacrifice fly to right field that produced the first run. Matthijs then doubled to left center to score Kale.

Chattanooga scored two runs in the fourth inning. Consecutive doubles with one out got the first run, and a two-out single to centerfield resulted in the second run.

Hannah Stiltner (6-3) picked up her third win in relief on the week. Stiltner threw 4.2 innings with two runs, five hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Stephanie Bryden started and went 2.1 innings with no runs, one hit, two walks and four strikeouts.

The Mocs scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning in the first game on a one-out RBI-single. The Spartans had a runner on third base with one out but ended the game with a pop out and ground out.

Chattanooga had tied the game up in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI-double to left centerfield.

UNCG scored the game’s first run in the first inning. Jasmine Palmer led off with a walk, went to second base on a sac bunt by Matthijs and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Marisa Sholtes walked, Palmer raced home on a fielder’s choice by Bryden.

The Mocs took their first lead in the next inning. A one-out, RBI-single up the middle knocked in the first run that was followed by a two-RBI single to left field.

The Spartans got a run in the bottom of the inning. Overdiep led off with a double to left centerfield and got to third base on a ground out by Kale. She scored on a groundout by Palmer.

UNCG’s only lead came in the fourth inning. With one-out Palmer hit a two-run homer, her fifth of the year, to left field.

Alicia Bazonski threw her 11 complete game of the season and allowed 10 hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

The series finale against Chattanooga will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. The Spartan’s seven seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
