HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Freshman Keri Kenkel shot seven-over par for the second-straight round as UNCG women’s golf moved up from sixth to a tie for fourth Monday afternoon at the Southern Conference Championship. UNCG shot 318 on the day, third-best of the nine-team field and trail the Furman Paladins by 43 strokes. Furman entered the tournament as the eight-ranked team in the nation and have shot a 603, 27-over par in the first two days.

Chattanooga and Mercer are currently tied for second in the tournament, both shooting 49-over par. Samford is tied with the Spartans with a team score of 70-over, followed by ETSU at 75-over. Wofford is seventh in the tournament with a score of 82-over, with The Citadel and Western Carolina rounding out the scoring at 123-over and 140-over through two rounds.

“We got off to a slow start again today.” Head coach Janell Howland said, “During the middle of the round the girls played some solid golf. We moved up the leaderboard and are excited to see what can happen in the final round tomorrow.”

Kenkel shot a seven-over par for the second straight round Monday. She finished the day with two birdies and seven pars. Kenkel shot two-over on the front nine and five-over on the back nine as she is currently in 13th place individually.

“I had another really solid day of ball striking today.” Kenkel said, “I felt like I played really well with the conditions being so difficult again. I had a really good front nine, but struggled a little towards the end with no putts falling again for me today. I’m proud of our team for being tough in these conditions and moving up a few spots. I’m really excited for the final round tomorrow because I know we are going to pull it all together and have a great finish.”

Freshman Tara Bettle shot the best round of any Spartan on the day, shooting a 78. She’s tied for 14th in the field having shot a combined 16-over through the first two rounds. Today, Bettle bounced back after bogeying the first six holes to earn nine pars and a birdie.

“After a slow start in today’s round with six-straight bogeys, I was able to keep my score together on the last 12 holes of the course.” Bettle said, “A birdie on the ninth hole and some really good up and downs helped me to stay at six-over par for the day. Its good to see how the team improved and I’m really happy that we could climb up in the standings. We’re headed in the right direction, hopefully we can continue this tomorrow and finish strong.”

Junior Natalia Asensio duplicated her performance from yesterday, shooting an identical 81. Asensio is tied for 20th with a combined score of 18-over. She shot six pars and three birdies in the second round. Two of her birdies came in the back nine where she shot a 3-over.

Louisa Tichy bettered her score by two strokes in the second round. She’s currently tied for 25th with a total score of 22-over par. Tichy shot an 82 in the second round, recording six pars with a pair of birdies in the round.

Savanna Mackie rounded out the scoring fur UNCG. Mackie is currently in 34th place out of 43 competitors with a score of 28-over. She improved her score by six strokes in the second round, shooting an 83 on the day. She recorded 13 pars, six on the front nine and seven on the back nine in the round.
