JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – UNCG softball (34-8, 9-1) won a pair of pitcher’s duels at the ETSU Buccaneers (13-22, 1-9) 1-0 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Betty Basler Field. Alicia Bazonski (15-3) and Stephanie Bryden (14-1) both threw two-hit shutouts in the circle for the Spartans.
In game one Bryden threw her her fifth complete game of the year and struck out 10 batters with three walks.
UNCG scored the lone run in the third inning with two of its three hits in game one. Jasmine Palmer singled to left field and advanced to second base on a fielding error. With one out Gabi Cubbage knocked Palmer in with a single to centerfield.
ETSU put runners on first and second base with one out in the seventh inning with an infield single and walk. Bryden ended the threat with a strikeout and groundout to Cubbage at third base.
The Spartans once again scored the only runs of the next game in the third inning. Leadoff batter Alexis Overdiep beat out a throw from the pitcher for an infield single. Overdiep then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Rachael McClaskey. With two outs Palmer hit her fourth homer of the year to centerfield to give UNCG a 2-0 lead.
Bazonski threw her 10th complete game of the season with four strikeouts and no walks.
Palmer had two of UNCG’s four hits in the game.
UNCG closes out the series at ETSU on Sunday at 11 a.m. instead of 1 p.m. due to possible inclement weather.
