GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (32-8) eased past the Presbyterian Blue Hose (3-33) in a doubleheader on Tuesday at UNCG Softball Stadium, winning a pair of games 11-1 and 8-0 in five innings. The Spartans earned the season sweep of the Blue Hose after winning their season-opener 14-0 in five innings as well.

UNCG opened the first game with three runs in its first trip to the plate. Jasmine Palmer was hit by a pitch with one out and went to third on a double to left field by Marisa Sholtes. Both Palmer and Sholtes scored on a double to centerfield by Jordan Gontram. Two-straight fielding errors produced another run.

The Spartans biggest inning came in the second. After Alexis Overdiep reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman, Makenna Matthijs knocked her in with a double to centerfield. After Palmer beat out a throw from the shortstop, Sholtes homered to centerfield. With one out Gontram got her second-straight double to centerfield and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Becca Kale. Consecutive singles by Rachael McClaskey and Overdiep brought home Kale for the final run of the inning.

UNCG added two more runs in the next inning. Palmer led off with a double to right center. The bases then became loaded after Sholtes walked and Gabi Cubbage reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. With two outs Kayleigh Willis knocked in two runs with a single that bounced off the shortstop’s leg and into the outfield.

Presbyterian got its lone run of the day in the fourth inning on a RBI-fielder’s choice with the bases loaded that was preceded by a fielding error.

Alicia Bazonski (14-3) threw her ninth complete game of the season. Bazonski allowed no earned runs, one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

The Spartans had five doubles and a home run as part of their 12 hits in 27 at-bats. Palmer, Matthijs, Sholtes and Gontram all recorded a pair of hits. Sholtes registered a game-high three RBI while Gontram and Willis each had two.

In the second game the Spartans once again claimed the lead in the first inning, this time with four runs. Leadoff batter Matthijs walked and went to third base on a double to left center by Palmer. Sholtes then hit her second homer of the day and 11th of the season to left field. With one-out Gontram hit a solo-home run to left field, her eighth of the year.

UNCG got a pair of runs in the next inning. Overdiep singled through the left side with one out, went to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left center by Matthijs. With two outs Sholtes knocked in Matthijs with a single up the middle.

The Spartans’ final two runs came in the fourth inning. Overdiep led off with a single and beat a throw to second base on a fielder’s choice by Palmer. Cubbage brought home both baserunners with a double to left field.

Hannah Stiltner (3-3) threw a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and two walks in her third complete game of the season.
