GREENSBORO, Ga. – The UNCG men’s golf team turned in a team score of four-over par 292 in the final round on Tuesday to finish sixth at two-over 866 (287-287-292) in the Linger Longer Invitational co-hosted by Mercer and Kennesaw State at the par-72 Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake Oconee Course. Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) led the Spartans with a 10-under 206 (67-71-68) to finish ahead of six top-100 ranked golfers tied for third-place. 

The 16-team field had 11 teams ranked in the top-100 in the country, including three in the top-50. Joining the Spartans in the field includes No. 8 Alabama, No. 44 Virginia, No. 45 Penn State, No. 53 Kennesaw State, No. 56 Middle Tennessee State, No. 61 Georgia, No. 75 Michigan, No. 78 Ohio State, No. 88 Charlotte, No. 99 Cincinnati, Akron, Augusta, Chattanooga, Mercer and Troy.

Alabama won the invitational with a team score of 24-under 840 (277-282-281), and Georgia (272-286-284) was two strokes behind. Penn State came in third at eight-under 856 (278-289-289) and Ohio State was fourth at three-under 861 (281-289-291). Virginia (286-287-292) finished three strokes ahead of UNCG, while Augusta (292-284-291) was one stroke behind.

No. 23 Lee Hodges of Alabama was the individual medalist with a 14-under 202 (67-68-67), and No. 69 Spencer Ralson of Georgia (65-72-67) was two strokes behind for second-place. Georgia’s Davis Thompson (63-69-74) was tied with Hendrix for third-place. The fifth-place finisher No. 6 Davis Riley of Alabama (69-72-69) was four strokes behind Hendrix and Thompson.

Hendrix’s third round score of four-under 68 was the was tied for the fourth-best of the day. With the Spartans starting on hole No. 1, he turned in an even-par 36 on the front-nine. After bogeying the first hole on the back-nine, he eagled on hole 12 and had birdies on 13, 15 and 18 for a four-under 32 for the last nine holes. 

Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished in a tie for 21st-place at one-over 217 (75-68-74). Stockwell had the second-best score for the Spartans with a two-over 74 in the round after turning in a two-over 36 on the front nine and even-par 36 on the back-nine. 

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) came in a tie for 42nd-place at five-over 221 (73-71-77).

Sophomores Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) and Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) both turned in a three-over 75 in the round. Powell tied for 53rd-place at nine-over 225 (73-77-75) while Brightwell (74-77-75) tied for 60th-place one stroke behind. 

Competing as an individual, sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) placed in a tie for 86th-place at 24-over (78-81-81). 

UNCG will be off Easter weekend and return to action with the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina from April 7-8 for the final tournament of the regular season.
