GREENSBORO, Ga. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished in a tie for seventh-place overall with a team score of 1-under par 287 after the first round of the Linger Longer Invitational co-hosted by Mercer and Kennesaw State at the Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake Oconee Course on Sunday. The second round will begin Monday with the Spartans set to tee off at hole No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The 16-team field has 11 teams ranked in the top-100 in the country, including three in the top-50. Joining the Spartans in the field includes No. 8 Alabama, No. 44 Virginia, No. 45 Penn State, No. 53 Kennesaw State, No. 56 Middle Tennessee State, No. 61 Georgia, No. 75 Michigan, No. 78 Ohio State, No. 88 Charlotte, No. 99 Cincinnati, Akron, Augusta, Chattanooga, Mercer and Troy.
The Spartans sit in a tie with Cincinnati and are one stroke ahead of Kennesaw State and five in front of Augusta. Davis Thompson of Georgia holds the individual lead by two strokes with a nine-under 63.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) was the Spartans’ top finisher of the day, posting a five-under 67 to tie for fourth place. Hendrix tallied an eagle and seven birdies.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) and sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) both shot a one-over 73 to tie for 40th place. Lyerly had five birdies, including four on the back nine, while Powell had four.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) is tied for 50th place with a two-over 74. Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) is one stroke behind for a tie in 60th place.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) turned in a six-over 78.
