GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (21-7) wrapped up its Spartan Classic with a perfect 5-0 record by beating the Towson Tigers (20-5) 10-4 on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. UNCG scored at least one run in every inning and had four homers on the day, including two by Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook).
The Tigers scored the first run of the game in the first inning. After a fielding error allowed the runner to advance to second base, a single to left field produced the run.
The Spartans tied the game up in the bottom of the inning. With one out Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) singled to right centerfield, and Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) singled through the left side. Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) hit a two-out double to left field to knock in Palmer.
UNCG acquired its first lead in the next inning. With two outs McClaskey got her first homer to right centerfield.
Towson tied the game in the third inning on a squeeze bunt.
The Spartans took the lead for good in the same inning. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) hit a solo-homer, her sixth of the season, to right centerfield. Matthijs then walked, and Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) then got her first home run of the season to left centerfield.
UNCG increased its lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning. McClaskey led off with a single to centerfield, went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex), got to third on a single through the left side and scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Cubbage.
In the following inning Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) got a leadoff bunt single. McClaskey then hit her second homer of the game and third of the year with two outs to right field.
The final two Spartans’ runs came in the sixth inning. Palmer led off with a single to right centerfield, and Sholtes singled up the middle with one out. Matthijs hit another RBI-double to left field to score Palmer. With two outs Bryden hit a single to centerfield to knock in Sholtes.
UNCG went 15-30 at the plate with seven players collecting hits. McClaskey had hits in all three at-bats. Palmer and Sholtes both went 3-4 with two runs. Matthijs went 2-3 with two RBIs, a run and a walk, and Bryden went 2-4 with three RBIs and a run.
Bryden (8-1) started in the circle and lasted four innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs and one walk with five strikeouts. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) recorded the last nine outs and allowed no runs or hits and one walk.
UNCG will continue its homestand with a doubleheader against Appalachian State on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m.
