GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (20-7) won both of its games in day two of the Spartan Classic on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium, defeating the Canisius Golden Griffins (3-17) 9-1 (six innings) and the Towson Tigers (19-4) 3-2 (eight innings). The Spartans ended the Tigers’ 13 game-winning streak and improved to 4-0 on the season in extra-inning games.

In the first game of the day UNCG took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff batter Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) drew a walk, and Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) then reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) knocked in Overdiep with a single through the left side, and Sholtes and Palmer both advanced on the throw to the home plate. Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the second run.

Canisius cut its deficit to one run in the fifth inning. After a one-out double down the left field line, a single to center field brought home the runner.

The Spartans responded with two runs in the same inning. With two outs, Palmer singled through the right side, and then Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) hit her fifth homer of the year to centerfield.

UNCG was able to end the game on the run-rule in the next inning. Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) led off with her fifth home run of the season to left center. Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford), Becca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) and pinch-hitting Rachael Johnson (Apex, N.C./Panther Creek) loaded the bases with three-straight walks. Pinch-hitter Melanie Darges (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive Magnet) knocked in Acquaviva and Kale with a single through the left side. The bases were loaded again after Palmer was hit by a pitch. Cubbage hit a RBI-single to right field, and Shotles ended the game with a RBI-single to left field.

Cubbage led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with three RBIs. Sholtes went 2-3 with two RBIs and a walk.

Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) threw her first complete game of the season to improve to 2-1. Bouplon gave up one run, six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

In the following game the Spartans got the walk-off win in the eighth inning for the second-straight day. With Palmer starting on second base with the international tiebreaker in effect for the tournament, Sholtes singled down the right field line with one out to bring home Palmer.

UNCG had just two hits entering the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 2-0. Gontram led off with a single up the middle, and with one out pinch-hitter Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) hit her third homer of the year off the left field foul pole to tie the game.

Towson scored their two runs early in the game. A RBI-infield single in the first inning produced the first run, and the Tigers then hit a one-out solo homer down the left field line in the third inning.

Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) (9-2) threw her sixth complete game of the season, allowing two runs, six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
