MESA, Ariz. – UNCG women’s golf took to the links Friday for the first day of the Clover Cup, hosted by Notre Dame. The Spartans finished the first day in 10th place out of 16 teams and 17 strokes off the leading Ohio State Buckeyes. The Spartans are back on the course tomorrow with the first groups teeing off at 8 a.m.
UNCG posted a 15-over par score, shooting 303 in the first round. The Spartans are just four strokes off of taking sixth place from TCU, who shot 11-over par on the day. Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) leads the Spartans as she’s tied for 13th, shooting one-over par. Nikolette Schroeder of Ohio State leads the field by two strokes, shooting five-under par 72.
“I had a rough start today but I’m proud of how I fought my way back into the round.” Tichy “I’m excited for the next two days and ready to see the team come back strong tomorrow.”
Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) are tied for 38th as both shot four-over par. Dobbins birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th holes, finishing even on the back nine. She added 11 pars. Bettle recorded a birdie on the 18th hole and 12 pars as she finished one-over par on the back nine.
Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) finished with three birdies, shooting six-over par and tied for 53rd. Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) added five pars in the opening round.
The 16-team field features Arizona State, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Delaware, FIU, IUPUI, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas State, Toledo and UNCG.
