GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball scored in all but two innings as the Spartans cruised to a 14-5 victory over the Lafayette Leopards Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartan offense went for 15 base hits as Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) and Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) each homered in the win. UNCG improves to 9-4 on the season, while Lafayette falls to 6-7 on the season.
UNCG improves to 3-1 when Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) takes the hill. The junior went 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs; three earned, struck out eight without walking a batter. Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Gardner-Webb) was first out of the bullpen. Welch went two-thirds of an inning, gave up two hits and a run with a strikeout.
Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) closed out Welch’s inning with a strikeout before giving way to Trey Kissack (Grand Island, Neb./Southeast CC). Kissack worked a clean eighth inning and Jack Ponder (Candler, N.C./Enka) struck out the side in the ninth.
Seven Spartans tallied hits in the contest with five going for multi-hit games. Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) was a catalyst of the offense, going 4-for-5 with two RBI; three runs scored and stole two bases. Trejo added a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI and scored twice while Shelton went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs.
“(Matt) Frisbee gave us a competitive start.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “Any time you get six innings, you’ll take it. He probably wasn’t as sharp with his fastball or his secondary pitches as he has been, but he got us deep into the game. Easton (Welch) came in and (Jake) Lewis came in to get the lefty. Then you had (Trey) Kissack and (Jack) Ponder, and those guys all came in and did a nice job closing out that game.
“Offensively, as it progressed through the game, we were able to figure out their lefty.” Jarrett continued, “He’s a good pitcher, but we were able to deliver some blows. Cesar’s (Trejo) home run and Tripp’s (Shelton) home run were big moments. (Josh) Madole had a good night. I thought our approach overall as the game went on was very good. It was the difference and we were able to open it up. Especially in the seventh inning, we had a string of good at bats that enabled us to open that thing up.”
Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) got the Spartans on the board in the first. The second baseman drew a lead off walk, moved up on a balk and a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman).
Lafayette responded the next half inning. Spencer Rouse led off with a single through the right side before Patrick Nelson homered to right field to take a 2-1 lead. Lafayette added to their lead in the top of the third. Steven Cohen hit a ground ball up the middle that ricocheted off second base into shallow right field for a double and moved to third after a failed pickoff attempt. John Marti drove a ball to center field to bring in Cohen and go up 3-1.
UNCG cut into the lead in the third before tying it up the next inning. Ember drew a two-out walk before Webster and Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) looped singles into left field to bring him in and cut into the lead. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) hammered his third home run of the season over the left field wall to tie it at three.
The Leopards regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Brandon Posivak led the inning off with a single and stole second and third to move into scoring position for Marti who singled to take the 4-3 lead.
The Spartans broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Webster got the rally going with a single and moved to third on a Moritz single. After a stolen base, Stewart walked and a wild pitch allowed a run to score and Moritz to move to third. Trejo lifted a fly ball to the warning track in left field to score Moritz as Stewart advanced to third. Shelton walked and stole second to put two in scoring position for Josh Madole (Hampstead, N.C./Topsail). Madole drove a double to left center to drive in a pair and give UNCG the 7-4 advantage.
UNCG doubled its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Moritz singled and Trejo walked to put two on. Shelton stepped in and hammered his second homer of the season to put the Spartans up 10-4.
Cohen got Lafayette on the board again in the seventh. After a lead off single, Marti drove in another run with a double to cut the lead to 10-5.
The Blue and Gold added to the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four more runs on six hits, with RBI from Webster, Moritz, Trejo and Shelton.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they’ll play a doubleheader with the Leopards beginning at 1 p.m.
