Softball Beats Virginia & App State in Final Day of UNCG Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (11-3) won both of its games in the final day of the UNCG Invitational on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium, beating Virginia (6-9) 5-0 and Appalachian State (4-10) 3-0. The Spartans concluded their home invitational with a 4-1 record and has won all three meetings against the Cavaliers this season.
In the first game of the day, three pitchers for UNCG combined to hold Virginia to five hits: Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett), Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) and Hannah Stiltner (Mebane, N.C./ Eastern Alamance). Bazonski started in the circle and gave up three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Bryden relieved her and allowed just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Stiltner retired the side with a strikeout in the final inning.
UNCG quickly acquired the lead with two runs in the first inning. With two outs Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) doubled to left field, and Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) followed with a homer to left center.
The Spartans added another run in the third inning. Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) and scored on a single through the left side by Cubbage.
The final two runs came in the fifth inning. Overdiep hit a leadoff double down the right field line, and Matthijs singled up the middle. With one out Cubbage doubled to left center that knocked in Overdiep. Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State) loaded the bases up with a single to the shortstop. Matthijs scored on a ball hit by Bryden that dropped in between the centerfielder and second baseman.
Cubbage led the way at the plate, going 3-3 with 4 RBIs. Overdiep was the only other Spartan with two hits.
Playing right after the victory over Virginia, this time Bazonski and Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) combined for a three-hit shutout over Appalachian State. Bazonski started again and gave up just two hits and two walks in five innings. Bouplon earned her first save this season with one hit and no walks allowed with two strikeouts.
The Spartans had only four hits in the game, but one was the difference in the game. With two outs Matthijs walked and Sholtes was hit by a pitch. Cubbage then hit a home run to center field, her second of the day and third of the season.
UNCG also drew four walks and were hit by pitches three times. Palmer was the only Spartan to collect two hits.
The Spartans will go back on the road next week for another weekend tournament with the Ninth Annual Bulldog Classic in Athens, Georgia. UNCG will play Jacksonville State, Radford and Georgia, starting with Jacksonville State on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
