GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished out the challenging Puerto Rico Classic in 12th place overall in the daunting field at he Rio Mar Golf Club Ocean Course hosted by Purdue. The 15-team field included 14 teams ranked in the top 100 in the country, including eight in the top 50 and five in the top 20. Joining the Spartans in the field includes No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 17 Clemson, No. 18 Kentucky, No. 33 Marquette, No. 37 N.C. State, No. 44 Northwestern, Purdue, Middle Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Maryland, East Carolina and Georgia.
The Spartans finished tied with Maryland in 12th place with a 37-over par 889 score (294-294-301), topping No. 20 Kentucky and Virginia Tech. No. 17 Clemson rallied on the final day to win the event with a 2-over par 854 (284-286-284), topping No. 9 Oklahoma by one stroke. Lee Hodges of No. 1 Alabama won the individual title with a 7-under par 206 (67-68-71), winning by two strokes over Turk Pettit of Clemson.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) was the Spartans’ top finisher in 17th place overall with a 3-over par 216. Stockwell was consistent all week with rounds of 71-72-73, finishing Tuesday with two birdies, four bogeys and 12 par scores. He finished the 54-hole event fourth in the entire field in par-5 scoring at 6-under par.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) finished tied for 43rd overall with a 10-over par 223. Brightwell also was consistent on the week, opening with a 2-over par 73 in round one before carding back-to-back rounds of 4-over par 75. He finished the final round with three birdies and 10 par scores.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) wrapped up in a tie for 55th place overall. Lyerly posted a 14-over par 227 as he recorded rounds of 80-70-77. He tallied nine par scores and a pair of birdies in his final round.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) placed 57th overall with a 15-over par 228. Hendrix recorded rounds of 72-80-76 and notched 10 pars and two birdies in his round Tuesday. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 69th place with a 20-over par 233 (79-77-78).
Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) played as an individual on the River Course and finished tied for 17th place in the individual field. Powell notched a 16-over par 232 on the par-72 course with rounds of 79-80-73. He closed with his lowest round of the event, recording 11 par scores, three birdies and four bogeys Tuesday.
