Men's Golf Moves Up To 11th Place After Day Two Of Puerto Rico Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team moved into a tie for 11th place overall with Maryland after the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Golf Club Ocean Course Monday. The Spartans will play the third and final round Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. UNCG will play from holes No. 12-15 with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans posted their second-straight 10-over par 294 on the par-71 course in round two and are tied for 11th place with a 20-over par 588 (294-294). No. 3 Georgia Tech leads the field with a 6-under par 562 (276-286) while Purdue is the only other team under par at 1-under par 567 (277-290). Lee Hodges of top-ranked Alabama holds the individual lead at 7-under par 135 (67-68), leading by one stroke aver Stephen Franken of N.C. State (6-under par 136).
The 15-team field includes 14 teams ranked in the top 100 in the country, including eight in the top 50 and five in the top 20. Joining the Spartans in the field includes No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 17 Clemson, No. 18 Kentucky, No. 33 Marquette, No. 37 N.C. State, No. 44 Northwestern, Purdue, Middle Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Maryland, East Carolina and Georgia.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) moved up to 16th place overall in the field with a 1-over par 143. Stockwell opened his event with an even-par 71 Sunday before carding a 1-over par 72 in round two. He posted eight pars, five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey Monday.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) moved up to 44th place overall with a 6-over par 148. Brightwell opened with a 2-over par 73 in round one before carding a 4-over par 75 in round two. He recorded 13 par scores and one birdie.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) bounced back from a tough first round to move into 51st place Monday. Lyerly sits at 8-over par 150 after posting a 9-over par 80 in round one. He came back with a 1-under par 70 in round two. He recorded a team-high 15 pars, two birdies and a bogey Monday, finishing with seven-straight par scores.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished day two in a tie for 58th place overall with a 10-over par 152. Hendrix posted a 1-over par 72 in round one before coming in with a 9-over par 80 in round two. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 66th place with a 13-over par 155 (78-77).
Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) played as an individual on the River Course and sits in 19th place in the individual field. Powell notched a 15-over par 159 on the par-72 course with rounds of 79-80 in his first two days.
