GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team finished out the Martin Downs Collegiate in third place as a team, finishing four strokes out of the top spot at the Osprey Creek Course at the Martin Downs Golf Club Tuesday. This event is the first time UNCG has hosted an event in the Sunshine State.

The Spartans finished the 54-hole event at 9-under par 853. UNCG opened with a 289 in the first round before posting a season-low 279 in round two. They finished out the week with a 285 Tuesday. West Virginia came from behind to win the event with a 13-under par 851 (297-278-276) while Seton Hall finished second overall at 11-under par 853 (287-281-285). Gregor Tait of Seton Hall won the individual title with a 9-under par 207 (67-69-71) while Matthew Sharpstene of West Virginia finished in second place at 209 (74-71-64).

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) was the Spartans’ biggest mover in the final round, jumping 15 spots in the standings to finish in a career-best eighth place. Lyerly fired a career-low 6-under par 66 Tuesday to finish with a 4-under par 212 (76-70-66) in the three-day event. He posted seven birdies, one bogey and 10 par scores in his final round. He finished the week 10th in the field with 12 total birdies, including four in the front nine and three on the back nine.

Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) was the Spartans’ top finisher in third place overall, three out of the lead. Hendrix posted a 6-under par 210 score with all three rounds at or under par. He opened with a 1-under par 71 before carding a 5-under par 67 in round two. He closed out the week with an even-par 72 Tuesday, posting four birdies, two double bogeys and 12 par scores. He finished fourth in the field with 13 total birdies and was third in the field in par-5 scoring, going 7-under par on those holes for the week.

Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) turned in an 18th-place finish with a 1-over par 217. Stockwell opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one, a 2-under par 70 in round two and a 2-over par 74 in round three. He finished the final round with three birdies, five bogeys and 10 par scores. He was fourth in the field in par-5 scoring at 6-under par for the three days.

Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) finished in a tie for 28th place overall at 4-over par 220. Brightwell opened with an even-par 72 in round one before posting scores of 73-75 in the last two rounds. He carded four bogeys, one birdie and 13 par scores. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 49th place with a 10-over par 226 (73-72-81).

Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) completed his first event at UNCG in 42nd place overall as an individual with a 9-over par 225. Powell opened with a 3-over par 76 before carding a 1-under par 71 in round two. He finished Tuesday with a 6-ovre par 78. Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) placed 56th with a 14-over par 230 (76-79-75) while classmate Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) finished in 59th place with a 17-over par 233 (81-74-78).

The Spartans return to action Feb. 18-20 when they make their annual trip to the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Golf Course.
