GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team moved into a tie for first place in the team standings after the second round of the Martin Downs Collegiate hosted by the Spartans in Palm City, Fla., on the Osprey Creek Course at the Martin Downs Golf Club Monday. The Spartans will play for the tournament title in the third and final round Tuesday with tee times from hole No. 1 between 8:20-9:00 a.m. Tuesday with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.

The Spartans moved into first place after carding a season-low 9-under par 279 team score, moving up from fourth place. The 279 score is the lowest this season and the lowest since notching a 279 in the second round of the 2016 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. UNCG (289-279) is tied for first place with Seton Hall (287-281) with an 8-under par 568 and four strokes in front of Elon at 572 (287-285).

Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) moved up six spots individually into a tie for second place, just two strokes out of the lead. Hendrix boasts a 6-under par 138 after two rounds (71-67) and is tied with Max Sear of West Virginia (70-68). He trails Gregor Tait of Seton Hall by two strokes, as Tait is 8-under par 136 (67-69).

Hendrix recorded 11 par scores, five birdies, one bogey and an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 17. He shot 3-under par in his last two holes of round. He leads the field in par-5 scoring, shooting a 5-under par through the first 36-holes and is fourth in the field with nine total birdies.

Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) moved up to ninth place overall after finishing with a 2-under par 70 in the second round. Stockwell checks in at 1-under par 143 after two rounds (73-70), tied with Spencer Ball of Mercer. He posted 12 pars Monday to go along with four birdies, including three in a five-hole stretch from holes No. 4-8.

Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) moved into a tie for 16th place overall with a 1-over par 145. Brightwell opened with a 72 Sunday in round one before posting a 1-over par 73 in round two. He carded 11 pars, two birdies, two bogeys, a double bogey and an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 3. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) is also tied for 16th place with a 1-over par 145, carding rounds of 73-72. Cansler led the team with 14 pars Monday to go along with two birdies and two bogeys. He is third in the field with 25 par scores through the first 36 holes.

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) rounds out the lineup in 23rd place, moving up 11 spots in the standings to 2-over par 146. Lyerly opened with a 76 in round one before rebounding with a 2-under par 70 in round two. He tallied 12 par scores, two bogeys and four birdies on the day, including three in a stretch of five holes from No. 2-6.

Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) turned in a 1-under par 71 in round two Monday, moving up to 27th place with a 3-over par 147 (76-71) as an individual. Powell recorded 14 pars, one bogey and three birdies. He posted back-to-back birdies on holes No. 14-15.

Sophomores Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) are tied for 55th place overall at 11-over par 155. Buben recorded a 7-over par 79 Tuesday while Wicker turned in a 2-over par 74.

Joining the Spartans in the field includes Mercer, Western Carolina, Seton Hall, Elon, George Mason, Lehigh, Boston College, West Virginia and James Madison.
