GREENSBORO, N.C. – Eleven Spartans scored and four reached double figures Wednesday night as the UNCG men’s basketball team posted an 82-48 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan in the home opener in front of a capacity crowd on campus at Fleming Gymnasium as part of the Spartan Showcase event. UNCG will continue its stretch of four games in eight days Friday night when it welcomes in Ferrum College to Fleming Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

The Spartans connected on 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field and out-rebounded the Bishops by a 43-28 margin, including 14 on the offensive glass. Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) led the way with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Redshirt sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds as he was 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

The Spartans got 52 points from four forwards in the victory with sophomore Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton) coming off the bench and scoring 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) rounded out the frontcourt with a near double-double of 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kuiper connected on 4-of-7 from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers in the win.

North Carolina Wesleyan, an NCAA Division III program, was held to just 32.7 percent (17-of-52) shooting from the field and only 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point land. The Bishops were held to just 48 points after scoring 81 in their season opener at UNCW last weekend. Justin Tankelewicz, the younger brother of UNCG graduate manager Tom Tankelewicz, scored a team-high 14 points while Adrian Moore added 10 points.

The Spartans came out of the game quickly, opening to a 13-5 lead just four minutes into the game and running out to a 28-18 lead at the 8:44 mark. UNCG continued to pour it out, posting an 11-2 run to take a 39-20 lead as Smith, Dickey and Kuiper combined to score 28 of the first 39 points. UNCG would take a 47-27 lead into the locker room after shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field compared to just 33.3 percent (10-of-30) shooting for the Bishops.

The second half saw the Spartans maintain their 20-plus point lead until ending any doubt with a 17-4 run to take a 78-43 lead with 3:11 remaining. Junior center Lloyd Burgess (Durham, N.C./Christ School) scored six points during the run, including back-to-back dunks down low. Freshman guard Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) added five points during the spurt, highlighted by a thunderous dunk on a breakaway.

Miller and Burgess each finished with six points while junior guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) added six points and five assists. Redshirt freshman Kylia Sykes (Washington, D.C./St. John’s College) scored four points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists and notched two steals in 12 minutes of action.
