GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s cross country team captured the Hokie Open women’s race Friday, winning the 4,000-meter race at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course. The women’s team topped Longwood and Ferrum in the team scores while the Spartans’ placed four in the top-15 individually.
Freshman Kayla Contreras (Ravensdale, Wash./Tahoma) was the Spartans’ top finisher with a time of 15:34.30 in ninth place while classmate Lefler McManus was 11th overall with a time of 15:55.20. Jennifer Fleming of Virginia Tech ran unattached and won the race individually with a time of 14:16.0.
Freshman Malea Smith (Davidson, N.C./William Amos Hough) was the third Spartans’ finisher in 12th place with a time of 16:00.60. Classmate Madison Owings (Apex, N.C./Apex) turned in a time of 16:15.90 in 14th place while freshman Josie McGee (Apex, N.C./Apex) was 17th overall with a time of 17:32.20. The Spartans return to action Nov. 10 at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
