WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four Spartans took the court Friday at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational in Winston-Salem. The four individuals each competed in singles competitions, and partnered to compete in two doubles brackets.
In singles play, Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) dropped his first two matches of the weekend, falling to North Carolina’s Anu Kodali, 6-2, 6-3 and Tennessee Tech’s Jorge Alfonzo, 6-3, 6-4 in the A1 bracket. Thompson will compete in the 13th place bracket as he will take on East Carolina’s Ronny Georgi tomorrow.
Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) suffered a similar fate in A2 singles, falling to Ivan Savejic of North Carolina State, 6-3, 7-5 before falling to Charlotte’s Alex Garcia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Vidgren will compete in the 13th place bracket, as he’ll take on Wake Forest’s Yuval Soloman tomorrow.
Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) competed in the B2 singles, falling in a tough three-set match to Tristan Smith of NC State, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2 before defeating Indiana’s Payam Ahmadi, 6-1, 6-0. He’ll take on UNC Asheville’s Oli Nolan, Saturday.
After receiving a bye in the first round of C3 singles, Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) knocked off East Carolina’s Vlad Anghel, 6-2, 6-0. Melnik will take the court against UNC Asheville’s Andrew Sinai tomorrow.
Doubles play saw the pair of Melnik and Vidgren defeat Charlotte’s Benjamin Wayand and Sam Rice, 6-0 in the A3 bracket. The pair will take on Indiana’s Bennett Crane and Antonio Cembellin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
Palmer and Thompson scored a smooth 6-1 win over Charlotte’s Siem Fenne and Scotty Cameron. The Spartan pair will take on Campbell’s Ondrej Labik and Louis Monterosso at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
