GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team surrendered a pair of goals separated by just 2:09 on the clock late in the second half as the Spartans suffered a 2-0 loss to Southern Conference-leading Samford Friday night in Birmingham, Ala. The loss drops the Spartans to 5-7-2 overall and 2-2-1 in SoCon play while the Bulldogs run their unbeaten streak to eight-straight games (7-0-1) improving to 8-5-1 overall and 4-0-0 in league play.

Freshman goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) recorded six saves in the loss for the Spartans, her second-highest total of the season. Samford posted 25-7 edge in shots on the night but only a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Jermaine Seoposenwe led all players with six shots to lead the Bulldogs, including her team-high ninth goal of the year to open the scoring.

Tyler-Cooper got things going in goal early in the first half as she made a pair of quick saves in the first 15 minute of the game. She stoned Seoposenwe in the 10th minute of play and got help from her defense on a corner kick in the 18th minute of play. Abriella Argueta had a chance with a header off the set piece but her shot was cleared off the line by the UNCG defense.

Samford scored the game’s first goal in the 73rd minute off an individual effort from Seoposenwe. She made a run through the UNCG defense, beating a defender at the top of the 18-yard box to get in free on Tyler-Cooper. She ripped a shot from 12-yards out that Tyler-Cooper made a sprawling save on, but the rebound popped straight up in the air and Seoposenwe beat everyone to the ball and headed home the rebound for the 1-0 lead.

Samford extended its lead to 2-0 just 2:09 later in the 76th minute of play. Ella Baggett made an overlapping run down the left-hand side and sent a cross into the six-yard box. Argueta was able to bring the ball down and turn, firing it past Tyler-Cooper from close range for the insurance goal.

The Spartans kept battling and had their best chance of the night in the 79th minute of play off a corner kick. Sophomore Ashton Duty (Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson) sent the corner kick into the box and junior defender Emily Jensen (Nelson, New Zealand/Santa Clara) beat everyone to the ball but her header shot struck off the cross bar and was able to be corralled by Maddox to keep the Spartans off the board.

UNCG continues its two-game road swing Sunday afternoon as the Spartans travel to Chattanooga. Game time against the Mocs is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
