GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team begins a stretch in which it plays three out of its next four games on the road, starting Saturday night when the Spartans travel to Macon, Ga., to face off against the Mercer Bears. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Bear Field and will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the ESPN App with links available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans are 4-1-1 over their last six games after seeing their five-game unbeaten and shutout streak come to an end Tuesday night against Wofford. UNCG is 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Southern Conference play with a 2-1 overtime loss against Wofford, a 2-0 win over No. 21 Furman and a scoreless tie against ETU. The Spartans have scored nine goals in 11 games while holding opponents to only nine goals.
Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) leads the team in scoring with six points, having scored two goals and dishing out two assists. Maguraushe has scored three points in the last two games. Junior forward Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) is second on the team with two goals. Freshman Nelson Oceano (Berlin, Germany) is one of five other players to score a goal this season and is third on the team with four points as he has dished out two helpers this season.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando), the reigning SoCon Player of the Month, has played every second in goal for the Spartans at 1036:42. Milligan leads the SoCon with a 0.78 goals against average, six shutouts and a .795 save percentage. He ranks second in the league with 35 total saves.
Saturday’s game marks the 11th meeting all-time between UNCG and Mercer and the eighth meeting since Mercer joined the league in 2014. The Spartans hold a 6-4-0 record all-time against the Bears but are 3-4-0 against Mercer since 2014. The two teams have split the season series the last two years and the last seven meetings have been decided by one goal each.
Last season, UNCG posted a 2-1 victory over the Bears in Greensboro as Alexander Lewis (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson) scored a goal and former Spartan Damieon Thomas scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute of play. Mercer posted a 2-1 victory in Macon as the Bears scored two goals in the first 16 minutes before holding off a late push by the Spartans. Lewis scored the Spartans’ lone goal of the game in the 83rd minute.
Mercer enters Saturday’s game with a 4-4-3 record overall and a 2-0-1 mark in SoCon play. The Bears are tied for first overall in the league with ETSU. Mercer has picked up wins this year against Wofford (3-1) and VMI (4-1) while tying No. 25 Furman 0-0. The Bears have scored 16 goals in 11 games while allowing 14 goals against.
Forward Will Bagrou, the reigning SoCon Player of the Year, leads the team and the SoCon in scoring with eight goals. Bagrou’s eight goals are twice as many as any other player in the SoCon this season. Five other Bears have scored goals this season for Mercer. Jeremy Booth has played every minute in goal (1062:36) and owns a 1.19 goals against average with 35 saves and one shutout.
