GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end and its shutout streak fall Tuesday night as the Spartans suffered a 2-1 setback to Southern Conference foe Wofford at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The loss drops the Spartans to 1-1-1 in SoCon play and 4-5-2 overall on the season.
UNCG saw its shutout streak end late in the second half as Wofford scored in the 81st minute of play to tie the game at 1-1. Lucas Altman converted off a corner kick for the Terriers, beating junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) from six-yards out. The goal snapped the Spartans scoreless streak at 613:09, a span of over six games of play.
The Spartans had a late chance to take home the victory in the final minute of regulation but could not get the game-winning goal. Sophomore defender Casey Penland (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) got free down the right-hand side and had a chance on goal alone with 25 seconds remaining in regulation but Hunter Wages was able to block the shot out of play for a corner kick as time expired in the second half.
Wofford claimed the victory just 2:02 into overtime as Austin Tuggle sent a long through ball from the midfield behind the Spartans’ defense. Sam Ross beat the UNCG defender to the ball and slid a shot past Milligan from 15-yards out on the breakaway for the game-winning goal.
The Spartans had the game’s first chance in the 27th minute of action. Freshman forward Thordur Johannesson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) sent a through ball into the top of the 18-yard box where it found freshman Nelson Oceano (Berlin, Germany). Oceano poked the ball past the on-charging Wofford goalkeeper Hunter Wages and ripped a shot towards the open net but a Wofford defender made a diving save on the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 42nd minute of play. Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) won the ball in the middle and sent a through ball behind the Wofford defense. Maguraushe’s pass connected with freshman Tyson Hichman (Asheville, N.C./West Henderson) in alone on goal and Hichman beat Wages from 15-yards out for his first career goal and a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans return to action Saturday night as they travel to Macon, Ga., to face off against the Mercer Bears. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
