GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team improved to 2-1-0 in Southern Conference play Friday night as the Spartans controlled play and posted a 2-0 victory over visiting ETSU at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans will look to continue their winning ways Sunday afternoon as they host Western Carolina at 2 p.m.

UNCG (5-6-1, 2-1-0 SoCon) held the run of play for most of the night, earning a 12-7 advantage in shots and a dominant 9-0 edge on corner kicks. The Spartans were especially dangerous in the second half, generating chances in the final third for most of the half.

The Spartans scored the game’s first goal in the 37th minute of action. Sophomore forward Cienna Rideout (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) made a long run down the left-hand side and was able to turn the corner on her defender. Rideout sent a cross into the box where it got past ETSU goalkeeper Lea Ann Cutshall. Junior midfielder Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir (Akureyri, Iceland) pounced on the loose ball from five-yards out and deposited it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and her first career goal.

The Spartans got on the attack early in the second half as they doubled their lead just 1:27 into the second half in the 47th minute of play. Senior midfielder Regan Lehman (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) found some space at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot on goal. Cutshall made the initial save but allowed a rebound to bounce out in front and Rideout beat her defender to the ball, ripping it into the goal from eight-yards out for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.

ETSU (3-8-0, 1-2-0 SoCon) had its best chance of the game in the 48th minute of play, just after the Spartans’ second goal. Rachel Harbin found space from 20-yards out and fired a bending shot on goal that got past freshman goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) but struck the far post to keep the Spartans with a two-goal lead. Tyler-Copper preserved her shutout in the 49th minute of play as she stoned Eleonora Goldoni from 12-yards out.

The Spartans had chances throughout the second half. Freshman forward Quiqui Hita (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) had a few chances off headers in the final 45 minutes, with her best chance coming in the 52nd minute, but her attempt sailed just over the crossbar. UNCG kept attacking and had another chance in the closing seconds of the game as junior defender Emily Jensen (Nelson, New Zealand/Santa Clara) had a chance off a corner kick but Cutshall was able to push the ball over the crossbar as time expired.
