ELON, N.C. – UNCG men’s tennis wrapped up its first event of the 2017-18 season Sunday. With the field narrowed, three Spartans competed in the singles events with four pairs still alive in the doubles brackets. Daniel Hammarstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) and Ian Melnik (Lawrenceville, Ga./Rivers Academy) both earned wins in their final singles matches of the weekend.


Gold singles saw Hammarstedt defeated James Madison’s Alvaro Arce, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 to take the consolation bracket.

Melnik notched a consolation bracket title after defeating James Madison’s Tate Steinhour in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5 in the Powell singles bracket.

Eric Whisnant (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) matched up with East Carolina’s Austin Allen in White singles. Whisnant suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat in the winner’s bracket.


Marcus Vidgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Stockholm Idrotts Gymnasium) and Nico Grewe (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) continued their partnership in Maroon doubles. The pair fell to Furman’s Cameron Green and Drew Singerman, 8-3 in the finale.

After falling in the consolation bracket of Gold doubles Friday, Ollie Palmer (Twyning, Great Britain/St. Peter’s) and Jack Burkill (London, Great Britain/Millfield School) took the court against Charlotte’s Easton Thomas and Alec Angraddi. The Spartan pair earned an 8-6 victory in the match in Gold doubles.

Melnik and Whisnant paired up in Powell singles, with the Spartans defeating Coastal Carolina’s Harry Cohen and Juan Castellanos, 8-5.

Hammarstedt and Logan Blaser (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hill) paired in the White doubles bracket, with the Spartans defeating North Carolina A&T’s Brett Caban and Jordan Lawrence.

UNCG men’s tennis is back in action this weekend as it heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma to participate in the ITA All-American Championships.
