GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team broke through for two goals Saturday night and the Spartans came away with a 2-0 victory over visiting UNC Asheville at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) and forward Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) each found the back of the net for the Spartans, leading UNCG to its first win of the year.

UNC Asheville had the game’s first chance of the night in the 13th minute of action. Ben Chapel got behind the Spartans’ back line and was in on a breakaway against junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando). Chapel struck a shot from 10-yards out, but pushed it past Milligan and wide to keep the game scoreless.

UNCG (1-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd as its pressure generated a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Alex Henderson (Mount Pleasant, S.C/Wando) sent a ball into the box where it defender Josh Masten (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) out-jumped the defender and headed the ball to the top of th1 18-yard box. Maguraushe volleyed a shot from 18-yards out past UNC Asheville goalkeeper Tyler Moore for his first goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans had a prime chance to extend their lead in the 36th minute of play. Mattis gained possession and made a run down the midfield where he laid off a perfect pass to freshman Manny Apau (Leominster, Mass./Southwest Guilford). Apau ran onto the ball and ripped a shot on goal that glanced off a UNC Asheville defender and caromed off the post allowing Moore to corral it.

UNC Asheville (0-6-0) had the fist good chance in the second half as Joe Lacasto got free at the top of the 18-yard box. Lacasto rung a shot on goal, but Milligan was there to thwart the effort.

UNCG took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute off a counter attack after a Bulldog corner kick. The Spartans quickly cleared their end and got the ball to Maguraushe at midfield. He threaded a perfectly weighted ball through the defense, springing Mattis in on the breakaway. Mattis didn’t miss as he drilled a shot into the top corner past Moore for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 cushion.

The Spartans were able to keep the Bulldogs at bay down the stretch as they used 25 different players in the lineup in the shutout victory. Milligan posted five saves in the win for his second shutout of the year while Moore posted two saves in the loss for UNC Asheville.

The Spartans hit the road for the final time in non-conference play Wednesday evening when they travel to Campbell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Buies Creek.
