GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team opened the 2017-18 season Saturday with the first two rounds of the annual Rod Myers Invitational hosted the Duke Golf Course. The Spartans will tee off for the third and final round Sunday from hole No. 10 from 8:15-8:55 a.m. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.
The field at the 2017 Rod Myers Invitational is a loaded 12-team group, featuring nine teams ranked in the top 100 in last year’s end of the year Golfstat rankings, including four top 25 teams. Highlighting the field with the No. 90 ranked Spartans includes No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 7 and national runner-up Oregon, No. 11 Wake Forest, No. 23 Duke, No. 48 Penn State, No. 49 Liberty, No. 80 Louisville, No. 94 East Carolina, UC Davis, ETSU and Princeton.
The Spartans finished the day in 10th place overall with a 12-over par 588. UNCG opened the season with a 298 in round one before trimming eight strokes in round two at 290. Wake Forest holds the overall team lead after 36-holes with an 18-under 558 (282-276) while Oregon is second at 12-under par 564 (286-278). Norman Xiong of Oregon has the individual lead with an 11-under par 133 (68-65) while Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest is second at 8-under par 136 (69-67).
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) leads the Spartans in his collegiate debut in a tie for 27th place overall with a 1-over par 145. Lyerly opened his career with a 2-over par 74 in round one with four birdies, six bogeys and eight par scores. He followed that up with a 1-under par 71 in round two, recording three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars. Lyerly ranked 10th in the field in par-4 scoring at 1-under par.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) is second on the team coming in at 31st overall with a 2-over par 146. Hendrix opened with an even-par 72 in round one as he tallied 16 pars to go along with one birdie and one bogey. He tallied a 2-over par 74 in round two with two birdies, four bogeys and 12 par scores. He ranks third overall with 28 total pars in the first 36-holes.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished day one in a tie for 37th place with a 3-over par 147. Stockwell posted a 74 in round one with two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars before notching a 1-over par 73 in round two with two birdies, one bogey, one double bogey and 14 par scores.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) rebounded from a tough first round to sit in a tie for 59th place overall at 6-over par 150. Brightwell opened with an uncharacteristic 6-over par 78 in round one before carding an even-par 72 in round two. He recorded three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores in the second round.
Freshman Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) rounded out the lineup in his collegiate debut with an 8-over par 152 to sit in 63rd place. Emmons posted rounds of 78 and 74 on the day, including four birdies in round two. He ranked 10th in the field in par-3 scoring at even par on the day.
Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) led the way as an individual in 45th place with a 4-over par 148. Wicker opened with a 5-over par 77 before carding a career-low 1-under par 71 in round two. He tallied four birdies, three bogeys and 11 par scores in the second round. Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) also played as an individual and sits in 71st place with a 16-over par 160 (77-83).
