GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG volleyball fell in straight-sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-22) to the Florida Atlantic Owls Saturday night in Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans fell behind early in the first set and were unable to take a set victory from the Owls. UNCG falls to 6-3 while Florida Atlantic improves to 5-2 on the season.

“I want to give Florida Atlantic a lot of credit.” Head coach Corey Carlin said , “They spent almost 20 hours on a bus and facing what their team is going through. To come up here and provide an opportunity to play, but then come out the way they did with the energy they did was big. They were assertive right from the first serve, that speaks to the quality of team that they are. They are very well coached. We knew they’d present a challenge for our team and they did. I’m proud of the way our team fought. We have to do a better job starting matches and being more ready to play. Especially against quality opponents, that’s even more critical. If we have a better start I think that’s a different match.”

“We’ve learned a lot about our team this weekend.” Carlin continued, “We’re grateful for all the administrators and all the support staff that made it possible for us to compete after the storm affected so many competitions and so many teams this weekend. We’re thankful for that opportunity. We took some steps forward this weekend. I’m proud of our team’s fight, and the direction we’re headed. Its going to be an exciting year and we’re looking forward to our next match against High Point.”

Holly Behrends (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) led the Spartan offense, recording 10 kills on 24 attacks. Senior Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) tallied nine kills and led the Spartans with 12 digs.

Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) earned nine digs in the contest. Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) distributed the offense, earning 29 assists.

FAU got the match started fast, rushing out to a 15-5 lead. UNCG climbed back into the match, cutting the lead down to five points at 20-15 following a Behrends kill. The Owls took a seven point lead at 24-17 before UNCG cut the lead down to four following kills from Megan Moran (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and Muench and a bad FAU set. FAU took the set on a Kristi Tekavec kill.

In the second set, UNCG cut the lead down to 13-12 following a kill from Moran before FAU made a 6-1 run to take a 18-13 lead. UNCG could come no closer than five points down the stretch, with the Owls two of the last three points following a kill from Gabrielle Dixon and a Spartan ball handling error.

The third set was very competitive, featuring 10 ties and two lead changes. The Spartans took their first lead of the match following a Moran kill at 18-17. UNCG tied the set up again at 22 all before FAU scored the final three points on kills form Abbi Reid and Kame Sigourney and closed the set and the match on a block from Mimi Marion.

The Spartans are back in action this Friday as they host they High Point Panthers at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gym.
