GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team surrendered two goals in the final 18 minutes of the game Monday night as the Spartans suffered a 2-1 defeat to Triad rival High Point in front of 1,881 fans at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans return to action Friday evening as they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 7:30 p.m. start in Conway, S.C.

The Spartans (0-1-1) controlled play for much of the first half, holding a 7-4 advantage in shots against the Panthers. UNCG had its best chance in the 42nd minute of play as sophomore defender Casey Penland (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) made a long run down the left-hand side.

Penland turned the corner and crossed the ball into the box where junior Jesper Larsson (Falkenberg, Sweden) volleyed a shot on goal, but a High Point defender was there to clear it off the line. Freshman Cyril Olowabi (Manchester, England) had an attempt at the rebound but his shot was pushed just wide of the goal.

UNCG took the 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of play. Freshman forward Sandro Bradara (Stuttgart, Germany) made a run down the middle of the box and got through two HPU defenders before being hauled down for a penalty kick. Bradara stepped up and drilled the penalty kick into the back of the net past Panther goalkeeper Keegan Meyer for his first career goal and the 1-0 lead.

High Point (2-0-0) responded to the goal and started to attack offensively, out-shooting the Spartans 9-5 in the second half. HPU took advantage of a lucky bounce to tie the game in the 73rd minute off a corner kick. Ryan Inman served a corner kick into the box where Penland went to clear the ball, but hit his clearance into the back of the net for an own goal, tying the game at 1-1.

The Panthers kept the momentum and took a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute of play. Siggi Benonysson found some space and placed a perfect cross into the box. Justen Shear made a perfectly timed run and volleyed the cross into the back of the net for the lead.

The Spartans feverishly pushed down the stretch for the tying goal but were unable to get anything going as High Point committed eight fouls in the final eight-plus minutes and were carded three times for delaying tactics. Junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) posted two saves in the loss while Meyer notched one save and was helped by one team save to earn the win.
