GREENSBORO, N.C. – Playing under the lights at the UNCG Soccer Stadium for the first time in 2017, UNCG women’s soccer bested Campbell 2-0 in an exhibition Saturday night.

“I thought the girls performed very well,” said head coach Michael Coll. “We tried out a couple of systems tonight that we really haven’t had much time to practice in preseason but we handled all of them very well. Our kids played with a good spark and intensity. Our two goals were very good and we probably could have scored four or five. Our overall performance tonight was very impressive.”

The Spartans largely controlled the matchup, holding long periods of possession throughout the game and outshooting the Fighting Camels 10-6. When Campbell was able to manage a quality chance, goalkeepers Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) and Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) were up to the task to keep the clean sheet.

Cienna Rideout (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) nearly got the Spartans on the board early, smashing a shot from the right side of the box that beat the keeper but was turned away by the cross bar.

Rideout was able to exact vengeance just 10 minutes later, delivering a cross into the box that was brought down by freshman Isabel Pearce (Pittsboro, N.C./Woods Charter School), who dribbled onto her left foot and snuck her shot inside the near post.

The score stayed 1-0 for UNCG until the 66th minute, when Caylin Prillaman (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) dribbled around her defender and sniped a shot across the face of the goal and into the upper right corner.

Campbell nearly halved the Spartan advantage in the 69th minute, as Cam Southern found some space in the box to get a clean shot away. However, Tyler-Cooper was well positioned to make the stop and Southern’s return shot when sailing high.

UNCG will open the regular season on Friday, travelling to Tallahassee, Florida to battle perennial ACC power Florida State at 7:00 p.m.
