CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG gave itself a chance in the seventh but couldn't complete its second comeback of the game Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Chattanooga at Frost Stadium.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) garnered a no decision after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) came on in relief and was saddled with the loss. The sophomore surrendered one run on a pair of hits.
Both teams struggled to get the offense going in the early part of the game but Chattanooga finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, plating three runs on five hits.
UNCG demonstrated its resolve in the next half inning, battling back with three runs of its own in the sixth to tie the game. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./ South Colonie Central) got things started by hitting the gap in left-center for a lead off double and scored on a Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) single and an error by Moc catcher Katy Richardson. After Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) re-entered for Wright Rachel McClaskey doubled to right-center to bring her home.
Pinch hitter Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) advanced McClaskey to third on a ground out and UNCG implemented a squeeze play to tie the game as Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) legged out a bunt single.
The momentum didn't last long however as Jesslyn Stockard reclaimed the lead for UTC with her second solo shot of the year.
The Spartans mounted a rally in the seventh, putting two runners in scoring position with one out but the comeback fell short as the Mocs took the series finale.
