Stockwell & Brightwell Lead Men's Golf Into 2nd Place At SoCon Championships After 36-Holes
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team rebounded from a tough first round and put itself in striking distance after 36-holes of the 2017 Southern Conference Championships as the Spartans are tied for second place heading into the final round, six strokes out of first place at Pinehurst No. 9.
The third and final round will now be played Tuesday with tee times from 7:30-8:06 a.m. after weather postponed Monday's round. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com and at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans posted a 22-over par 598 score after 36-holes, playing in wet and cold conditions Sunday in Pinehurst. UNCG opened with an uncharacteristic 303 score in round one but rebounded with a 295 in round two and is tied with Chattanooga (308-290) for second place. Geuntae Kim of ETSU holds the individual lead at even-par 144 (73-71) while Wes Gosselin is second at 1-over par 145 (73-72).
The Spartans have finished second the last two seasons, falling by one stroke to ETSU is 2016 and falling in a playoff to the Bucs in 2015. Both years, the Spartans rallied from a 36-hole deficit to have a chance on the final hole of the tournament. UNCG trailed by five strokes last year after 36-holes and six strokes in 2015.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) and freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the way for the Spartans Sunday, finishing in a tie for third place overall, just two strokes out of the lead. The two finished at 2-over par 146 as no golfers finished under par in the challenging conditions.

He opened the first round with nine pars, four bogeys and five birdies. He finished with a flourish, notching four birdies on the back nine to post just one of three rounds under par on the day. He followed that up with 11 pars, two birdies and five bogeys in round two. He finished second in the field in par-5 scoring at 3-under par and was second overall with seven total birdies.
Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) gave the Spartans three top-15 golfers after the first two rounds, placing 14th overall with a 7-over par 151. Brightwell opened with a 6-over par 78 as he overcame his first four holes where he was 6-over par. Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte, Latin) sits in 24th place overall at 11-over par 155.
