ELON, N.C. – Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) registered a pair of RBIs in a losing effort Wednesday as UNCG fell by a 7-2 margin to Elon at Hunt Softball Park.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) made the start in the circle for UNCG, taking the loss after throwing four full innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) allowed three runs (one earned) on a hit and three walks in her 0.2 innings of relief, while Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day)
The Phoenix got on the board in the second inning, tagging Bazonski for a lead off single through the left side, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Emily Roper. Elon added to its lead in the third with a Walker Barbee single past the outstretched McClaskey at short, plating Alaina Hall.
UNCG came back in the fourth to cut the Phoenix lead in half. Sholtes did the heavy lifting, taking Kenna Quinn to the opposite field for a solo home run to left.
However, the Momentum didn’t last long for the Spartans as a couple of costly errors in the fifth turned into a big inning for Elon. The Phoenix plated four unearned runs in the inning, opening up a 6-1 lead.
The Phoenix added a run in the seventh on a Hall homer to right field. UNCG put together a basesloaded threat in the seventh but only managed a single run as Elon closed out the game to take the season series three games to one.
UNCG jumps back into Southern Conference action this weekend with a three game series with Furman in Greenville, South Carolina. The meeting between the Spartans and Paladins is a matchup of the top two teams in the SoCon standings.
