Maynard Strikes out Five in Relief as Baseball Falls at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) struck out five of the seven batters he faced. The strong relief performance wasn’t enough as the Spartans fell to the High Point Panthers 1-0. The junior didn’t allow a hit in 2.1 innings of work and has allowed just three hits in his last four outings. UNCG falls to 22-14 on the season, High Point improves to 20-16.
“Unfortunately the run in the first inning ended up being the difference in the game.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “You wouldn’t have thought that coming in here, the guys were ready to play, we pitched well and played good defense. To have not scored, I felt like our at bats were competitive. We hit some balls hard, we had a lot of lineouts, but we just couldn’t get over the hump. Their left-hander pitched a good game. He had good movement and changed his arm slot, and that was very effective. Their bullpen right-hander did a nice job of closing it out.”
“I thought our guys competed.” Jarrett continued, “Caleb (Webster) had some really good at bats, (Michael) Goss had good at bats. You look up and down the lineup, I know the hits and the runs not so much, but the guys competed and it just didn’t go our way today. I was happy with the way (Jack) Maynard finished the game for us. (Alex) Sova pitched out of some trouble and Lewis gave us a good start. It just didn’t go our way today. High Point got the run early and it held, they deserved it.”
Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) started on the hill. The sophomore logged 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and the games only run as he earned the loss. Lewis struck out a pair and walked three before giving way to Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC). Sova threw a clean 2.0 innings, striking out a pair of hitters and allowing just one hit. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va/Patrick Henry CC) finished out the game, throwing 2.1 innings. Maynard retired all seven that he faced, and struck out five.
Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) and Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) each tallied a pair of hits. Webster doubled in the third inning; with Goss’s double coming to lead off the ninth. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) led off the top of the seventh with a single for UNCG’s other hit.
The Panthers were able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the first. Austin Zente led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Josh Greene singled up the middle to bring in Zente and put the Panthers up 1-0.
UNCG threatened in the top of the ninth. After getting a lead off double Michael Goss, the Spartans struck out twice and ground out as they were unable to tie the game.
The Blue and Gold returns to action this weekend as it makes its first trip to Columbus, Ohio as it will play the Ohio State Buckeyes in a three-game series.
