Women's Golf In 13th Place After Two Rounds At Brickyard Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team played the first 36-holes of the Brickyard Collegiate Monday and sits in 13th place heading into the final round of the two-day event hosted by Mercer at The Brickyard Golf Club. The par-72 course plays at 6,269 yards and round three will be begin with a shotgun start Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with the Spartans set to start from holes No. 15-17. Live scoring will be available via Birdie Fire with links at www.uncgspartans.com.

The Spartans posted a 61-over par 637 score on the first day with rounds of 312 and 325. No. 9 Furman holds the overall lead at 8-over par 584 (293-291) while No. 21 Texas A&M was second at 11-over par 587 (294-293). Furman's Haylee Harford holds the individual lead with an even-par 144 (71-73) and holds a 1-stroke lead over six different players at 1-over par.

Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) led the Spartans in a tie for 51st place at 13-over par 157. Tichy opened with a 3-over par 75 in round one, highlighted by two birdies, before posting a 10-over par 82 in round two.

“It was a fun day on the course,” Tichy said. “I hit some solid shots and I am really excited to see what the course has in store for us tomorrow.”

Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) posted a 15-over par 159 to sit in a tie for 55th place. Powers opened with a 10-over par 82 in round one before following up with a 5-over par 77 in round two. She posted two birdies and nine par scores in the second round.

“Today was a solid day of golf for me,” Powers said. “After a tough start, I was able to get it together and have a really good string of holes leading into my second round. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.”

Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) posted a 4-over par 76 in the first round, posting 10 pars and two birdies. Kershaw had to withdraw early in the second round due to illness.

“I had a slow start to the day, but was able to fight back,” Kershaw said. “I hit some good shots and took advantage of my birdie putts when I had them. Overall, it was a solid first round.”

Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) is tied for 64th place overall with an 18-over par 162. Asensio opened with a 7-over par 79 when she had 12 par scores before posting an 11-over par 83 in round two with seven pars.

Freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) rounded out the lineup in 74th place overall with a 24-over par 168 (85-84). Senior Emily Kurey (Alpharetta, Ga./Louisville) played as an individual and posted a 36-over par 180 (89-91).

Joining the Spartans in the 15-team field includes No. 9 Furman, No. 21 Texas A&M, No. 42 Augusta, No. 56 Maryland, No. 59 Old Dominion, No. 75 ETSU, No. 82 Chattanooga, No. 86 Kennesaw State, No. 89 Troy, No. 90 Middle Tennessee, No. 93 Mercer, Jacksonville, North Florida and Samford.
