Baseball Completes Sweep of Furman and Extends Winning Streak to Five
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spartan baseball completed a three-game sweep over the Furman Paladins Sunday afternoon, earning a 9-3 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. It is the first time UNCG has ever swept the Paladins in a three-game series. The Spartans have now won five-straight games, and 14 of their last 16 contests. UNCG improves to 21-10 overall and 7-2 in Southern Conference play. Furman falls to 11-19 and 1-8 in the SoCon.
“That was a well-played game.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “We got great starting pitching from Dan (Loats). We defended very well and offensively we were able to figure (Matt) Quarles out. Once we got deeper into the game our guys made some good adjustments and we were able to hang some crooked numbers on the board. Quarles pitched very well, but I was pleased with some of the adjustments we made to help us put up runs in the fourth inning to get things going. (Michael) Goss and (Caleb) Webster had key at bats and were able to drive in runs for us. It was good to see Tripp (Shelton) be able to run one out of here.”
“Loats gave us a quality start, (Andrew) Wantz was very efficient at the end and that allowed him to finish the game up without having to throw a lot of pitches.” Jarrett continued, “I’m very pleased with the way we played today, especially with how we played defense. We had a couple double plays that helped us along the way. If you go around the horn, the defensive execution this weekend was very good.”
Dan Loats (Eden Prairie, N.C./NIACC) got his first weekend start Sunday afternoon. The junior matched a career-high 6.0 innings, scattering six hits, struck out four batters and allowed three earned runs. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) earned his second save of the weekend, throwing the final 3.0 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two batters.
The middle of the lineup drove in eight of the nine runs as the trio of Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) and Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) combined to go 7-for-10 with eight RBI and five runs scored. Goss and Webster each recorded three hits. Goss went for two doubles and a triple. Webster also tripled and Shelton hit his first home run of the season.
Furman got on the board first by virtue of a solo home run from Landon Kay in the second inning.
UNCG took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating four runs. Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) singled and moved to second on an Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) fly out. Goss doubled down the left field line to score one. Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) followed with a single to bring in Goss. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) hit his first home run of the season to left field to cap the Spartan scoring.
The Paladins cut into the Spartan lead in the top of the sixth inning. Jason Costa walked and Kay doubled to start the frame. A single from Sky Overton scored Costa and put runners on the corners. A bunt single from Sims Griffith cut the lead down to 4-3 in favor of UNCG.
The Spartans answered back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. Moritz singled to start the inning and Goss and Webster hit back-to-back triples to score two. Shelton followed with a sacrifice fly to push UNCG’s lead to 7-3. UNCG wasn’t done scoring yet, Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) singled and came around to score on a Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) triple.
UNCG added a run in the bottom of the seventh, using an RBI single from Webster to extend the lead to 9-3.
The Blue and Gold is back in action Tuesday as it takes on the NC State Wolfpack at 6:00 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
