JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – UNCG tallied another 16-hit performance and rode a strong start from Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) to a 12-3 series-clinching victory over the ETSU Buccaneers Sunday afternoon.  UNCG’s offense scored in every inning except the first and never trailed in Sunday’s contest. The Spartans improve to 18-10 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Conference.  ETSU is now 13-12 and 2-4 in the SoCon.

“(Matt) Frisbee was really good today, and his slider was thrown with command and down in the zone.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “He executed his fastball and our defense played great which allowed him to have some quick efficient innings to extend his outing.  He had a three-pitch inning, I can’t recall one that I’ve ever seen while coaching a team.  The way we defended allowed him to get deep in the game. (Ryan) Clinch caught a great game, we had a some really key plays, Tripp (Shelton) made some nice defensive plays.”

“Offensively, it was a very balanced game, top to bottom.” Jarrett continued, “The bunting game was in play for us again, Cesar (Trejo) had an amazing day that really helped jolt our offense and put crooked numbers on the board.  When you’re able to run a few out of the park, it adds tremendously to your scoring.  The bottom of the lineup, 6-8 had drove in eight runs, that shows you there’s balance all the way through our lineup.  I’m very pleased with the way we played today and Saturday. Unfortunately Friday night didn’t go our way, but to come back and play like we did these last two days says a lot about our players, their toughness and their resiliency.”

Frisbee logged a career-high 7.2 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs.  He struck out three hitters on 96 pitches. Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing a pair of hits, a run and a strikeout.  Marking his 35th-straight appearance with at least one strikeout.

Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) had a stellar day at the plate.  Trejo finished 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, five RBI and four runs scored.  Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC) and Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) each had three-hit days.  Clinch finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.  Shelton went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.  Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) finished with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the contest.

The Spartans got the scoring going in the top of the second inning. Goss and Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) drew walks, and Trejo brought them around on his first home run of the afternoon.

ETSU got on the board in its half of the second inning.  With two outs, Cullen Smith singled and moved to second after Hunter Parker drew a walk.  Caleb Longley brought in Smith with a single to centerfield to cut the lead to 3-1, Spartans.

UNCG regained its three run lead in the top of the third inning.  Webster missed a home run by a foot, hitting a double off the top of the wall in left center before coming around to score on a Shelton double to right.

The Blue and Gold scored solo runs in each of the next three innings. In the fourth, Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) legged out an infield single and stole second.  Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) singled through the right side to bring him in and push the lead to 5-1. In the top of the fifth, Trejo hit a double along the left field line and came around to score when Clinch dropped a single into left field to increase the lead to 6-1. The Spartans added another solo run in the top of the sixth, this by virtue of a Goss sacrifice fly to foul territory in right field.

UNCG tacked on two more on Trejo’s second home run of the day, a no-doubter to left field after Shelton reached on his second hit of the day.

The Bucs got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning.  After a lead off single from Aaron Maher, Christian Bailey hit a double to right center to score Maher and cut the lead to 9-2.

The Blue and Gold stretched its lead to 10, scoring twice in the final inning.  Trejo singled and scored on a Clinch double.  Clinch came in to score when Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) singled through the right side.

ETSU attempted a ninth inning comeback.  The Buccaneers scored a run on two hits and left a runner on before Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) made a diving catch in the gap in left center to end the inning and preserve the Spartan victory.

UNCG is back in action Wednesday, April 5th as it takes on cross-town rival North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium.
