GREENSBORO, N.C. – As they have much of the year, UNCG sits atop the Southern Conference standing after defeating Western Carolina 7-3 Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium, sweeping the first SoCon Series of the season.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) earned the win to improve to 13-8. Bazonski scattered seven hits, allowing three runs (two earned), while striking out four over six innings. Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) closed things out in the seventh, not allowing a hit in the frame.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead after the first inning as Jasmine Palmer (Lake Biltmore, N.C./Florida State) led off with a single through the left side and was moved over to second on an Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) sacrifice bunt. Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) did the rest, crushing a double down the third base line.
After a Catamount run tied the game, UNCG flexed its muscle in the second to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) got things started with a walk and Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./Stony Brook), Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) and Rebecca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) plowed back-to-back-to-back home runs to left field.
Western Carolina again cut the deficit by a run in the third but the Spartans came back with two more in the bottom half. Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) singled to right field and McClaskey hammered the fourth dinger of the game for the Blue and Gold.
WCU scored one more run in the fourth to make it 7-3 but from there the Spartans were able to hold the Catamounts off the board and finish out the sweep.
UNCG returns to action on Wednesday, heading to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for a rematch with the Tar Heels. The Spartans defeated UNC 6-3 earlier in the year in Greensboro.
