Men’s Golf Finishes Tied For Sixth At Prestigious Linger Longer Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team turned in one of its best performances of the year this week, finishing tied for sixth overall in a challenging field at the Linger Longer Invitational that features 11 top-50 teams and three top-25 programs hosted by Kennesaw State at Great Waters at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga. The Spartans topped five ranked teams and finished tied with No. 55 Ohio State.
The Spartans posted a 4-under par 860 score, their second-lowest 54-hole score of the year, trailing only the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. Fourth-ranked Baylor won the event with a 33-under par 831 (274-287-281), topping No.8 Virginia by 15 strokes. Greyson Sigg of Georgia, the 38th ranked golfer, won the individual title with a 16-under par 200 (67-65-68).
Sophomore men’s golfer Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) led the Spartans with a career-best finish of fifth place overall in the challenging field, besting his previous top finish of 10th place at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. Hendrix posted an 8-under par 208 score, his lowest 54-hole total of his career. He opened the week with a career-best 5-under par 67 before posting a 3-under par 69 in round two and an even par 72 Tuesday.
Hendrix finished ninth in the field with 35 total pars, including 12 in the final round. He posted three bogeys in the first nine holes Tuesday before finishing with three birdies on the back nine for the even round of golf. He ranked sixth in the field in scoring on par-4 holes with a 3.93 and was sixth best in par-3 scoring at 2.92.
Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) also turned in his best showing of his career, placing 15th overall with a career-low 4-under par 212. He opened the week by matching his previous career-low of 1-under par 71 before posting an even par 72 in round two. He set a new career-best mark Tuesday, posting a 3-under par 69 to move up six spots in the final standings. He posted 13 par scores and just one bogey in round three while recording birdies on holes No. 2, 6, 10 and 18. His ranked fifth-best in the field with 15 total birdies and was third best in the field in par-5 scoring at 4.33.
Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) finished tied for 37th overall in the field with a 3-over par 219. His 219 score over 54-holes is a career-best, surpassing his previous mark of 220 set at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate and the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate last fall. He opened with his second-best round of the year at 2-under par 70 before turning in rounds of 75 and 74. He finished the third round with 12 pars, including seven straight to end the tournament.
Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) tallied a 56th place finish in the event with a 7-over par 223. Stockwell opened with an even-par 72 before carding rounds of 76 and 75. He opened his final round with an even-par on the front nine and posted three birdies on the day. Senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounded out the lineup in 60th place with a 9-over par 225 (76-74-75). McGlone led the field with two eagles on the week, posted an eagle-3 on the par-5 No. 18 in round one and an eagle-2 on the par-4 No. 11 Tuesday.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes host No. 43 Kennesaw State, No. 56 Alabama, No. 51 Augusta, No. 4 Baylor, No. 77 Charlotte, No. 20 Georgia, Maryland, Mercer, No 37 Michigan, No. 45 Middle Tennessee State, No. 55 Ohio State, No. 67 Troy, No. 8 Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth.
