GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team wrapped up play at the annual Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., in 14th place overall at the at the Longbow Golf Course hosted by Notre Dame. The Spartans return to action March 31-April 2 when they co-host the Bryan National at Bryan Park in Greensboro.
"I am proud of Natalia for battling today," head coach Janell Howland said. "She showed a lot of grit throughout her round. A little bad luck with her finish, but excited for how she fought."
The Spartans finished the three-day, 54-hole event in 14th place with a 62-over par 926 score with rounds of 307-307-312. Arizona State won the event with a 26-under par 838 (281-275-282) while Oklahoma was second at 13-under par 851 (282-285-284). Julienne Soo of Oklahoma held the lead from start to finish with a 13-under par 303 (66-66-71).
"We have some things to work on to get us ready for the last part of our season," Howland said. "We are looking forward to getting back home and working hard. We are excited to be hosting the Bryan National in a couple of weeks."
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) turned in the Spartans’ low round of the day Sunday with a 3-over par 75. Asensio finished with eight pars and four birdies on holes No. 6, 8, 11 and 15. She finished tied for 54th overall with a 13-over par 229 (77-77-75).
"After only hitting six greens, I am proud of how I managed to finish with a solid score," Asensio said. "As a team, we know we have some work to do, but we are all really excited to host the Bryan National."
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) was the Spartans’ top finisher in a tie for 51st overall. Kershaw finished 12-over par 228 after posting rounds of 77-73-78. She finished Sunday with four birdies on holes No. 2, 7, 9 and 18.
Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) posted a 68th place finish with a 17-over par 233. Tichy opened with a 5-over par 77 in the first round before posting back-to-back rounds of 6-over par 78. She finished round three with a team-high 10 par scores.
Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) finished tied for 71st overall at 28-over par 244. Powers posted rounds of 84-79-81 in the three rounds while Dobbins carded rounds of 76-83-85. Senior Emily Kurey (Alpharetta, Ga./Louisville) played as an individual and finished with a 49-over par 265 (90-87-88).
Joining the Spartans in the 15-team field includes Notre Dame, Arizona State, Cincinnati, FIU, Florida State, Houston, Indiana, IUPUI, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, TCU, UNCG, Vanderbilt.
