Palmer Goes Deep Three Times as Softball Splits Twin Billing with Elon
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jasmine Palmer (Lake Biltmore, N.C./Florida State) left the park three times on Saturday, leading the Spartans to a doubleheader split with Elon. With Friday’s win, the Phoenix claimed the three-game series 2-1.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) was awarded the win in the early game, throwing all seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out three. Bazonski moves to 11-6 on the season with the win.
Palmer bookended the game with two lead off home runs, including a walk-off job in the seventh. Palmer reached in all four plate appearances, drawing a pair of walks and scoring three of UNCG’s four runs.
After Bazonski retired the Phoenix in the top half, Palmer jumped all over a Kenna Quinn pitch and sent a lead off shot over the left field fence to put UNCG up 1-0.
Elon grabbed the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs off of two hits and an error in center field by Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./Stony Brook). However, the Spartans would regain the lead in the fifth, plating two runs on a Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) single to left.
Facing its last three outs, the Phoenix extended the game in the seventh with a solo homer to tie the score at 3-3. However, Palmer made sure to end the Elon elation quickly, clobbering a walk-off dinger on the second pitch of the inning.
Mackenzie Winslow (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) made her second start of the year in the later game, drawing the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) came on in relief to throw 4.1 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on a pair of hits and six walks.
The Phoenix took a three-run lead in the second, tagging Winslow for three hits in the inning. EU added two more runs in the third, though Bouplon did a nice job to limit the damage, leaving the bases loaded.
UNCG came back in the bottom half of the third to draw a run closer as Palmer kept her hot bat going with a solo homer over the wall in straight away center.
After a weather delay, Elon picked right back up in the fifth, adding three runs to its lead thanks to a three-RBI double by Callie horn. Once again the Spartans got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) blasted a solo home run off of the scoreboard in right-center.
That was as close as the Spartans would get, though, as Elon closed out the game to claim the weekend series.
UNCG returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Marshall in a single game at 4:00 p.m. in Greensboro. The game will be streamed live via YouTube.
