Offensive Outburst Leads Baseball to Victory Over Lafayette

UNCGSpartans.com 03-16-2017

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball handily defeated the Lafayette Leopards, 25-7 Thursday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.  The Spartans had seven players with multi-hit contests, and six with multiple RBI.  UNCG improves to 9-8 on the season, while Lafayette falls to 2-15.

The 25 runs in a contest are the second most in school history.  The record stands at 26, when UNCG defeated North Carolina A&T, 26-1 on April 23, 2003 at home.

“Good offensive day.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “Austin Embler had a good day, with the base-hit bunt and a grand slam in the same inning, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.  (Ben) Spitznagel had four base hits, it was good to have him back and active and involved.  He’ll continue to get better, but it was good to have him in the game today.  Up and down the lineup we had big at bats and big hits.”

“(Jack) Maynard was a little better tonight but wasn’t as sharp with his fastball as we’d like to see.” Jarrett continued, “(Alex) Sova) had a good inning, and (Ben) Kerner had a clean ninth and got us out of a mess in the eighth.  That was a good win, it was nice to open it up offensively.  That’s two well-played games in a row for us.”

UNCG racked up 23 hits in the contest, scoring 25 runs.  Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) led the charge with a 4-for-5 performance with four RBI and two runs scored.  Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) drove in four and scored another. Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) drove in a game-high five runs on three hits and scored twice.  Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) also drove in four runs on three hits and scored three runs.

Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) started on the hill.  The junior threw 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits four earned runs and struck out seven hitters.  Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout.  Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Gardner-Webb) logged a scoreless frame.  Jeremiah Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C./West Wilkes) threw 0.1, giving up three earned runs with a strikeout.  Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) threw 1.2 innings, striking out two batters.

Lafayette jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning.  Luke Robinson drove in two runs on a double to right field to give the Leopards the early lead.

The Leopard lead was short-lived as UNCG scored three runs in its half of the first. Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on a Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) singled to put runners on the corners.  Webster doubled down the left field line to score one before Shelton doubled to score two more to put the lead up to 3-2.

UNCG continued its rally in the bottom of the second frame.  After two walks and a bunt hit loaded the bases, Spitznagel tripled to left field and scored on a throwing error.  A single and two walks loaded the bases up again as Shelton singled through the left side to score two.  Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC) walked for an RBI.  Embler connected on his first career home run, a grand slam to push the lead to 14-2.  Back-to-back triples from Moritz and Webster pushed the lead to 16-2.

UNCG added two more runs in the bottom of the third.  Lafayette took advantage of three hit-by-pitches to plate two runs to cut the lead to 18-4.

The Spartans continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Webster connected for a two RBI single, and Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) followed with an RBI single, both to left field. Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) singled to left field to drive in another.  Trejo hit a two-run home run in the sixth to push the lead to 25-4.

Lafayette scored three runs in the top of the eight to cut the lead to 25-7.

UNCG and Lafayette are back in action for two games tomorrow afternoon. First pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
