GREENSBORO, N.C.- While Saturday was a parade of homers for UNCG softball, Sunday was the complete opposite. The Spartans mustered just five hits all day in losses to George Washington (10-1) and Longwood (4-0) at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
In Game One, Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) took to the circle for the start. UNCG used three pitchers in the game in Bazonski, Mackenzie Winslow (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) and Kylie Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth County Day).
In the end it was Bazonski who took the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks.
After GW jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first, the Blue and Gold bounced back with a run in the bottom half to tie the game. With the bases full of Spartans, Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) wore a pitch off the elbow, sending Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) from third.
However, from there the Colonials controlled the ball game. GW regained the lead with six runs in the second inning, four of which came in on a Jenna Cone grand slam. The Colonials added two runs in the third and another in the fourth to complete the five-inning route of UNCG.
In the Second Game, Bazonski again made the start in the circle, pitching all seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, striking out five along the way.
Both starting pitchers took no hitters into the fourth but Longwood broke through with a run in the sixth inning. The Lancers added another three runs in the seventh frame and the Spartans had no answer for starting pitcher Sydney Gay, managing just a pair of singles off of the righty all day.
The Spartans will look to shake off the losses on Wednesday, travelling to Buies Creek, North Carolina for a meeting with Campbell at 5:00 p.m.
