Strong Start From Frisbee Leads Baseball to Victory over Michigan State
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG used another strong start from sophomore Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) to hand Michigan State its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon. The Blue and Gold defeated the Green and White, 4-1. Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) provided the pop for the offense, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. UNCG improves to 2-5 on the season. Michigan State falls to 6-1.
“That’s two great Sunday wins for our team.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “That’s a very talented Michigan State team and they’re very balanced, top to bottom in the lineup. Pitching, from the starters to the back end of the bullpen is very impressive. Backs against the wall again today, to go through what happened last night, a tough loss on Friday night and to come out and get a win today says a lot about our guys’ toughness. Like I said last week, from 3 o’clock on on Sunday’s can determine your season. Frisbee punched out Ando to end the seventh exactly at 3:00, and we finished strong.”
“Today was a completely different ball game than it was last night. That’s the neat thing about baseball, same two teams, same diamond, totally different game.” Jarrett continued, “We had to plate a run early, and (Michael) Goss’ bunt was outstanding, Tripp’s (Shelton) hit and run, those enabled us to score. (Matt) Frisbee was outstanding. He showed toughness and poise. Couple different times when the count got away from him a bit, he stepped off the mound, gathered himself and came back and executed pitches. He gave us exactly what we needed to get it to Chad (Sykes). Chad came in and executed pitches and threw strikes. Our defense was outstanding. (Ben) Spitznagel handled eight fly balls in right, our infield defense was good, (Ryan) Clinch had a big caught stealing behind the plate. I’m so proud of our program and the toughness our guys showed today.”
Frisbee (2-0) logged 7.0 innings in his second-straight start Sunday afternoon. The reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week scattered six hits and struck out five batters, surrendering his first earned run of the season earning the victory. Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) earned the save (1) in the contest, tossing the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a batter.
Goss recorded the only multi-hit effort of the day for UNCG. The senior first baseman hit his second home run in as many days, dropped down a sacrifice bunt and scored once more in the victory. Six players totaled at least one hit in the contest, with Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) driving in the other RBI.
The Blue and Gold struck first, scoring a solo run in the bottom of the second. Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) singled and Trey Jacobs (South View, N.C./Hope Mills) walked to put two on. After a Goss sacrifice bunt, Embler hit a dribbler to the second baseman to drive in Stewart and give UNCG the 1-0 lead.
UNCG added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC) singled to start the inning and moved to third on a well executed hit and run off the bat of Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth). The MSU catcher tried to catch Clinch sleeping on third base, but sailed the throw into left field allowing Clinch to score.
Michigan State cut into the UNCG lead in the top of the fourth. Zach McGuire started the frame with a single to center and advanced to second on a balk. Brandon Hughes followed with a single up the middle to score McGuire and halve the UNCG lead, 2-1.
The Blue and Gold matched Michigan State’s run total in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases, a wild pitch allowed Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) to score and push the lead to 3-1.
UNCG added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, using a solo home run from Goss to increase the lead to 4-1.
The Blue and Gold is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 28th as it hosts the NC State Wolfpack at 4:00 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium
